Snapshot of Silence: The Frame That Changed Everything
I snapped the photo seconds before gunfire ripped through the quiet neighborhood. I froze in place. A couple walking their dog dove into the grass of the nearest yard, clutching each other and the animal. They were okay.
A black car tore past, the noise and destruction trailing with it. Sirens wailed in the distance. Everyone on the small street was safe. Family members stood in shock, jaws gaping as they scanned the scene. A small crowd had formed. Everyone was fine—a miracle.
But why were they staring at me? I was just another bystander, the photographer. Maybe they thought the answers, or the perpetrator, were hidden on my phone. I couldn’t tell them otherwise. I couldn’t move. Fear had me pinned.
I looked down. Far down. The towering palm trees that once loomed far above were now much closer. I looked again and saw…myself, sprawled on the ground.
