Before the Ground Fell Away
Henry looked down at his rumpled shirt and tie and the dirt caked beneath his fingernails. He stood in the middle of a forest, crowded with trees that climbed endlessly into the sky. He had no memory of how he got there.
This was supposed to be one of the happiest days of his life.
The thought landed heavily. His chest tightened. He felt ridiculous and lost and unbearably small. Accountants didn’t get happy endings like this.
Then he saw her…
Shiny white, moving toward him with patient, certain steps. When she was just within reach, he grabbed hold, pulled himself upward, and the ground dropped away beneath pounding hooves as they raced toward the sunset.
